broken cog in the machine

broken cog in the machine

Welcome to the machine Lyrics
Artist(Band):Pink Floyd

Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
Where have you been?
It's alright we know where you've been.
You've been in the pipeline, filling in time,
Provided with toys and 'Scouting for Boys'.
You bought a guitar to punish your ma,
And you didn't like school, and you
know you're nobody's fool,
So welcome to the machine.

Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
What did you dream?
It's alright we told you what to dream.
You dreamed of a big star,
He played a mean guitar,
He always ate in the Steak Bar.
He loved to drive in his Jaguar.
So welcome to the Machine.

Marx's Theory of Social Class and Class Structure

The main classes in capitalism are the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. However, other classes such as landlords, petty bourgeoisie, peasants, and lumpenproletariat also exist, but are not primary in terms of the dynamics of capitalism.

a. Bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie or capitalists are the owners of capital, purchasing and exploiting labour power, using the surplus value from employment of this labour power to accumulate or expand their capital. It is the ownership of capital and its use to exploit labour and expand capital are key here. Being wealthy is, in itself, not sufficient to make one a capitalist (e.g. managers in the state sector or landlords). What is necessary is the active role of using this wealth to make it self-expansive through employment and exploitation of labour.

Historically, the bourgeoisie began cities of medieval Europe, with the development of traders, merchants, craftspersons, industrialists, manufacturers and others whose economic survival and ability to increase wealth came from trade, commerce, or industry. In order for each of these to expand their operations, they needed greater freedom to market products and expand economic activities. In the struggle against the feudal authorities (church and secular political authorities) this class formed and took on a progressive role. That is, they helped undermine the old hierarchical and feudal order and create historical progress. For a segment of this class, wealth came by employing labour (industrial capital), for others it came through trade (merchant capital), banking and finance (finance capital), or using land in a capitalist manner (landed capital). It was the industrial capitalists who employed labour to create capital that became the leading sector of the bourgeoisie, whose economic activities ultimately changed society. In Britain, this class became dominant politically and ideologically by the mid-nineteenth century. By employing workers, industrial capital created the surplus value that could take on the various forms such as profit, interest and rent.

b. Proletariat. The proletariat are owners of labour power (the ability to work), and mere owners of labour power, with no other resources than the ability to work with their hands, bodies, and minds. Since these workers have no property, in order to survive and obtain an income for themselves and their families, they must find employment work for an employer. This means working for a capitalist-employer in an exploitative social relationship.

This exploitative work relationship recreates or reproduces itself continually. If the capitalist-employer is to make profits and accumulate capital, wages must be kept low. This means that the proletariat is exploited, with the surplus time (above that required for creating subsistence) worked by the worker creating surplus products. While the worker produces, the products created by this labour are taken by the capitalist and sold – thus producing surplus value or profit for the capitalist but poverty for workers. This occurs each day of labour process, preventing workers from gaining ownership of property and recreating the conditions for further exploitation.

The antagonistic and contradictory nature of this system is evident as capitalists attempting to reduce wages and make workers work more intensively, while workers have exactly the opposite set of interests. Work and the labour process in the capitalist mode of production are organized so that workers remain propertyless members of the proletariat. The surplus products and value created by workers turns into capital, which is accumulated.

Historically, the proletariat emerged as the aristocracy began to suffer financial difficulties in the later middle ages. Many of those who were supported by working for the aristocracy lost their livelihood – the "disbanding of the feudal retainers and the dissolution of the monasteries." Using enclosures, changing the conditions of production in agriculture, and denying peasants access to common lands and resources, landowners transformed land into pasture land for raising sheep, or sold land to farmers who began to develop grain and livestock production. People who had subsisted on the land were denied the possibility of making a living on th

Day 113 - Wave Race 64

Day 113 - Wave Race 64

Day 113 - Wave Race 64

I was very tempted to make this entry "Wave Race (series)", but when I give it more thought, it really is Wave Race 64 that is the peak of this franchise....so far? [I'd love more]. Again though, as Wii Sports Golf perhaps diverted Nintendo off wanting to do another Mario Golf, I fear the Power Water Cruiser game in Wii Sports Resort has taken Nintnedo's attention off giving us fans a proper new instalment to the Wave Race series.

Technically "Wave Race" kicked off on the Nintendo Game Boy. I picked that game up around 1999 thinking it would be portable Wave Race 64, but instead it was more of a portable rendition of the 'on water' races you'd find in the Micro Machines games, although with less flair and no colour.

Wave Race 64 though was a breathtaking experience unlike anything I'd played before it. Firstly, it came out early in the Nintendo 64's lifespan, and at that time many of us were still very much vulnerable to being shocked (with awesomeness) at how amazing games could look in true 3D.

Whilst Wave Race 64 did look stunning at it's time, it didn't rely on it's pretty face to get by. Sure the fact it looked good could pull people over to the N64 kiosk set up in Toys R Us (or wherever you personally often saw one), but once you tried the game out you instantly felt the amazingly realistic water physics on hand, and actually felt like you were taming a real Jet Ski on the waves when playing the game.

In a sense Wave Race is the Gran Turismo of Jet Ski games (although Wave Race came first). What I mean by that is how Gran Turismo was meant to be a driving simulator, but paired with a racing concept. Wave Race feels like what a Jet Ski ride would feel like, but instead of just freely riding around, you're there to be the fastest most daring person holding on to a pair of wet handlebars.

Wave Race: Blue Storm on the Gamecube was a really great sequel that came and did more of the same just with updated visuals, and for that it was an amazing game that I've played through from start to finish at least twice in my life so far, however there just remain a lot more things that have stuck in my head (music and track layouts mostly) in Wave Race 64, which I guess in the long run tells me it's the 'Wave Race' game I have the most love for.

Aug 28 - New Arrival

Aug 28 - New Arrival

(971/365)
I finally ended my search for a new toy. A few months back I'd all but settled on a DR650 (2007ish to be exact). Compared to the DL1000, it is a "light and nimble" bike. Even up until last week, I was set on the DR. Then I started looking at the DR-Z 400 which got me to ask the question "what else is there?".
I didn't think I'd like a 250, even though that is my suggestion to all new riders, go with the smallest displacement while you are learning. I didn't think I'd like it until I tried one that is. I tried one last night, a 2009 KLX that looked so beat up that it could have passed for a '96.
This is an '06 KLX250S with 3,800 miles on the Odi. However, you'd swear it just came off the showroom floor. I tried my best to locate bikes in my search that were well maintained and garaged. I did a good job, save for the '09 I saw yesterday.
I was pretty torn between an '05 DR-Z with only 1,600 miles on it and in showroom condition and this KLX. Better judgement won out. I've never owned a dirtbike, so I am playing it safe.
It is a true Dual Sport, unlike my primary ride which is a Dual Sport in marketing classification only. This is the kind of bike that you can commute on (at least I can) and shoot down a few power lines on the way to work (or back home from work).
The V-Strom is going nowhere, selling or trading is not an option at this time. I will continue to ride it as my primary (it is a hell of a lot more comfier) but will take out my new 'mistress' from time to time to indulge in some other pleasures ;-)

Batteries not included!

My daughter has 4 battery operated vehicles (yes I said 4, my mother loves yardsales!) but this one is the only car she drives. Her Barbie jeep, Doom buggie, 4-wheeler and some other battery operated car that looks alot like this cozy coupe, sits in my husbands garage collecting dust. She is scared to death of them. I think it may have something to do with her hitting a tree with the 4-wheeler the first time she rode it. Dont worry, she didnt hit the tree hard. It was more like a bump but it was enough that she didnt want on it again after that. We will try again next year. For now she can just stick to the flinstone style car.

This one is also second hand one bought from YAHOO bid. Andrew does love it. Andrew has many ways to play with this ride on toy car. The most fun he plays “Acting get in/out the car like Anderson”, those are like “Open car door, get in and set well, close car door, turn engine key and go”. From his eyes, I can tell he is really like this car more than other toys. I believe in that this car can let him busy for a while.
